Materiality thresholds for monthly reviews
Copying year-end planning materiality into every monthly review either floods the team with noise or ignores emerging issues. Monthly close assurance needs a thinner threshold for investigation triggers and a clearer rule for what simply gets monitored.
Two numbers beat one
Publish an investigation threshold (everything above gets a written note) and a memo threshold (everything above must appear in the assurance memo). Mixing them produces either silence or endless commentary.
Watch cumulative drift
Individually immaterial misses that point the same direction for three months deserve escalation even if each sits under threshold. Track theme tags on exceptions so drift is visible.
Revisit after system changes
ERP cutovers, new 3PL partners, or pricing model shifts should trigger a temporary lower investigation threshold for two closes. Stability assumptions expire when the process map changes.
